Dangers of animal saliva

Expressing affection on pets can be done in many ways, such as stroking, tickling, kissing up. But especially for the kiss, you should think twice before doing so.

A new study from New Zealand found that the saliva of the animal may be a means of transmission of infections that are resistant to antibiotics to humans. The study, headed by Professor Nigel French from Massey University to analyze the irrational use of antibiotics in animals is the cause.

Massey said, exposure to saliva of animals as a means of transmitting bacterial infection has been identified by the WHO as a major health problem and growing. He stressed on the need for attention to the increase in the incidence of two types of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that commonly cause urinary tract infections.

These antibiotic-resistant infections are found in almost all pets are spread through liquids and dirt. Animals such as dogs or cats cleaning themselves by licking, that's why they may be filled with saliva as well as by the antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

"When they were about oral saliva humans, transmitting the bacteria most likely to occur there," Massey said.

So he insists on the importance of avoiding a kiss with pets, including licks on the face. If there is a lick on the hand, then the person should also wash your hands immediately.

Previous studies found that animals lick at the mouth of the risk of gum disease in humans. This is due to the transmission of bacteria from animal to human saliva.
